  • Does a Pocket Combo come apart, or does it telescope?

It telescopes. The sections slide into themselves rather than pulling apart, so there's nothing to leave behind at the ramp. Some of our other travel-friendly models use two separate pieces instead, so check the specs if packed length is the deciding factor.

  • Is a Pocket Combo real fishing gear or just a travel novelty?

It's real gear that fits in a backpack pocket. Hiking, camping, kayaking, lunch-break pond missions: that's its territory, within its light line and lure limits. It won't out-cast or out-muscle a full-size combo, and it isn't trying to.

  • How small does a Pocket Combo get?

The standard Pocket Combo fishes at 30 inches and collapses to 18. Before collapsing any of them, take off the lure, reel up the slack, and close it gently from the tip sections down.

  • How do I rethread an inline Pocket Combo?

Same EZ Thread trick as the Tangle-Free: tie the replacement line to the stored threading weight, feed it into the top of the rod, and let gravity pull it through to the handle. Remove the weight, run the line through the reel cone, tie off at the spool, and wind on the recommended amount under light tension. Put the weight back in its compartment so it'sthere next time. There's a tutorial video if you'd rather watch it done.

  • Can I put braided line on a Pocket Combo?

Light braid works on Pocket models, but micro spincast and inline systems are built around monofilament; braid can slip on the spool and add friction inside the blank. When in doubt, mono.

  • What performance tradeoffs come with a compact Pocket or dock combo?

You give up casting distance, hookset line movement, and leverage, and small reels carry less line with lighter drags. In exchange you get gear that goes everywhere and shines at close range. Fish them inside their ratings and they're a joy. Heavy cover, long casts, and big water still belong to full-size combos.
